Kenyon Yovan’s massive debut weekend earned him Pac-12 and national player of the week honors and the Ducks also saw starting pitcher Robert Ahlstrom return to the mound for a solid debut against UC-Santa Barbara. The junior left-hander struck out four and allowed just one hit and a walk over three scoreless innings on Sunday.

“Felt good to be out there,” Ahlstrom said. “Had my off-speed stuff working for me, probably the best it’s felt probably ever. Need to execute my fastball a little better, keep it down in the zone and use that attack early to setup my off-speed a little better.”

Though his line was nearly spotless in the box score Ahlstrom did have some command issues. He threw a pair of wild pitches and hit a batter. However, he also worked around having runners in scoring position in each frame while being on a lower pitch count for his first start of the season and the shortest of his 15 at UO. I Don't Need Therapy I Just Need to Go to Oregon Shirt

“He’ll be used as he earns the innings and what he’s earned so far is he’s earned to be starter,” Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski said. “We’ve known that through the scrimmage innings he threw and then this last weekend, his presence, his intangibles, his confidence are all things that are tremendous. He’s a very, very good competitor. He’s the kind of guy that wants to beat you no matter what he does, ping pong or anything else, he’s that kind of guy. This last weekend he showed poise, he showed confidence, he set a tone. I would anticipate using him as one of our key starters going forward.”

UO is expected to announce its rotation for this weekend’s three-game series at Oregon State later today and Ahlstrom will likely get one of them.

Wasikowski said Ahlstrom, who led the Ducks with a 3.93 ERA with 61 strikeouts to 20 walks over 73.1 innings in 2019, could move up in the rotation from Sunday as the season progresses, with the plan to build up his innings entering Pac-12 play next weekend. I Don't Need Therapy I Just Need to Go to Oregon Shirt

Ahlstrom was set back in preparing for the season by COVID-19. The Eugene native said he was out for 24 days due to contact tracing and later for contracting the virus, but got on a schedule to return once healthy.

“That was tough, just a big setback there,” Ahlstrom said. “I was able to do whatever I could to stay in shape. Then once I got back to practice, working with (pitching coach Jake) Angier, figuring out a schedule of the best way to get me back, not necessarily rush it, and keep my arm fresh and ready to go when I did get the chance. I faced some live hitters, threw some bullpens and flat grounds to get ready for that Sunday game. It felt good out there.”
