"We wanted to make a film about what it means to be a company, in every sense of that term, and what goes on over the course of an entire season," said Ross, recently retired professor of emeritus in film at the U of M. ANDIEZ Just A Girl Who Loves Running Poster
To that end, he and Goodman — an assistant professor of film — attended not just dance rehearsals and performances — the obviously cinematic areas of ballet life — but board meetings, physical therapy sessions, fundraisers, costume fittings and other less glamorous but necessary events.
As the season progressed, the company's 21 fulltime dancers became used to the presence of the cameras, and this combination of trust and boredom enabled the filmmakers to capture candid moments without being intrusive. By the end of the season, Ross and Goodman had close to 88 hours of footage (most of which was shot by Goodman), which they then whittled and wrestled into its current 86-minute form.

Taking audiences behind the curtainA production of the University of Memphis Department of Communication & Film, the documentary was created with the cooperation of the ballet (obviously), but it remained independent: The ballet had no control over the film's content.
Nevertheless, Gretchen Wollert McLennon — who appears in the film as a Ballet Memphis board member, before she became company president and CEO — said she thinks the movie will benefit the ballet for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it takes viewers beyond the curtain of "mystique" that sometimes seems to separate arts groups from their audiences.
